Lake Moovalya, the small body of water impounded behind Headgate Rock Dam north of Parker, Arizona, will be lowered approximately ten feet in elevation from January 6 to January 18, 2003.

The drawdown is scheduled to begin at 8am Mountain Standard Time on Monday, January 6. Water levels are expected to return to normal elevations by approximately late afternoon Saturday, January 18.

During the drawdown, Lake Moovalya will be lowered approximately 10 feet to elevation 354.40. It is anticipated the time required to lower the lake will be approximately 2 days, but if unfavorable conditions are encountered, the drawdown time could be extended.

Releases from Parker Dam and flows below Headgate Rock Dam will vary as necessary to meet downstream water requirements. Flows below Parker and Headgate Rock dams could range as low as 1,500 cubic feet per second if rainy weather conditions or other extenuating circumstances (i.e. contractor delays) should occur. Lake Havasu elevations are expected to remain within normal operating levels during this activity. The drawdown is expected to have only a minimal impact on flows below Headgate Rock Dam.

This drawdown should not be construed as normal or as a resumption of a tradition practiced in past years which featured a significant drawdown (nine feet or more) every year. Most drawdowns in the future will be limited to a drop in lake elevation of approximately one foot.

All RIVER USERS should remember that fluctuating river flows may conceal or create natural hazards such as moving sandbars, gravel bars, unstable riverbanks, floating or submerged debris, or other unfamiliar obstacles. Caution should be be exercised while using the river between Davis Dam and the Mexican Border at San Luis, Arizona.
